The Format

"Interventions and Lullabies" by The Format has to be one of the strangest albums to come around in a while. I know it was released way back in '03, but I have been listening to it a lot lately, and I think it deserves a review by a music snob like me.
I love this album. Although all the songs have similarities to each other, I just can't get tired of them. The musical styling in and of itself is unique, to say the least... Sometimes like a country-blues sound underneath a very light, happy melody... Sometimes beautiful acoustic guitar, sometimes just a fantastic indie-ish mood.
But what's more astounding to me is the heavy lyrics carried in these happy-sounding songs. Example: "Tie the Rope"- without the lyrics it would be pretty upbeat, but damn, there's some emotional content. "Just tie the rope and kick the chair/ Leave me hanging there, gasping for air/ Yeah, don't mind me three feet from the ceiling."
I have two favorite songs on this cd:
1: "Sore Thumb," which is a painful song about, what else, lost love. "So please just leave/ you dont mean that much to me/ You keep the ring, I'll take those
Saturdays in bed// cause i know you need them/ as for me its nothing new just another two years." ...Tear...
2: "On Your Porch," which brings me to tears almost every time. It opens with "I was on your porch/ the smoke sank into my skin/ so I came inside to be with you// And we talked all night/ about everything we could imagine/ cause come the morning I'll be gone// And as our eyes start to close/ I turn to you, and I let you know/ that I love you." It features great lyrics and an amazing picked acoustic guitar riff.
So once again, I love this album. You should too.
